Our Postgraduate Diploma in Periodontology is the ideal course for dentists looking to introduce more advanced periodontal and implant treatment within their daily practice.

The programme offers dentists across the world the opportunity to acquire intensive knowledge of the basic principles of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, the skills for non-surgical and surgical therapies, the management of Prostho-Perio and Endo-Perio relationships, and the fundamentals of diagnosis and treatment planning in implant dentistry.

A modular structure was adopted, taking into consideration the time constraints and job responsibilities of practising dentists. The course is divided into six obligatory modules of two days each, leading to a University Diploma in Periodontology.

1 Module I: Anatomy, Classification & Diagnosis
  • The healthy periodontium — gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cement, alveolar bone
  • Blood supply, lymphatic system and nerve supply to the periodontium
  • Definition and classification of periodontal diseases — old and new classifications
  • Epidemiology of periodontal diseases and risk factors
  • Etiology and pathogenesis — pathogenic bacteria, immunology, genetic polymorphisms
  • Histopathology of periodontitis — initial, early, established and advanced lesion
  • Microbiology: dental plaque as a biofilm
  • Systemic illness and its effect on the periodontium
  • Diagnostic microbiology and diagnostic procedures
  • Treatment planning and treatment schedule
2 Module II: Non-Surgical Therapy
  • Principles of cause-related therapy
  • Oral hygiene instruction and motivation
  • Supra- and subgingival instrumentation
  • Hand instrumentation versus powered scaling
  • Re-evaluation and maintenance protocols
  • Antimicrobials and host modulation
  • Hands-on: instrumentation technique
3 Module III: Surgical Periodontal Therapy
  • Indications for periodontal surgery
  • Access flap surgery
  • Resective surgery and osseous recontouring
  • Regenerative periodontal surgery
  • Furcation management
  • Suturing technique in periodontal surgery
  • Hands-on: flap design and suturing
4 Module IV: Mucogingival & Plastic Surgery
